I live in the UK city of York and in March 2019 it declared a climate emergency, with the city’s council agreeing to become net carbon neutral by 2030. It was a bold declaration and an ambitious target. But York is far from alone in taking such a stand – more than 70 countries and hundreds of cities have now pledged to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 or sooner. Some countries, including the UK, have even turned this into a legally binding target.
